Florida Republican legislator Tyler Sirois has proposed a new bill to ban cell-cultured meat production, sale, and distribution in the state. If enacted into law, these regulations will take effect in July 2024.
This proposal aims to impose penalties ranging from fines between USD 500 and USD 1,000, legal charges, and possible suspension or immediate cease and desist orders for foodservice venues for non-compliance. In addition, potential cell-cultured meat businesses in Florida would need regulatory approval from the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
Analyst QuickTake: This proposal contradicts the increasing acceptance and supporting legislation of cell-cultured meats at the federal level. Despite the environmental benefits of cultivated meats, this proposal reflects the skepticism among the populace about the connection between meat consumption and climate change. Florida is the third most populous US state, and this bill could have detrimental effects on the US’ progress on cultivated meats.
