German biotech company MicroHarvest has unveiled its new pilot plant in Lisbon, Portugal, to produce a single-cell protein using microbial fermentation for food and feed applications.
MicroHarvest claims the single-cell protein carries a protein content of over 60% and can be produced within a day using its technology. The company intends to commercialize it by early 2024, with a production capability of one ton per day, in partnership with a contract manufacturer.
Analyst QuickTake: This pilot facility was built with EUR 1.5 million (~USD 1.7 million) backing from Simon Capital, who partnered with MicroHarvest earlier this year. In addition to the funding, this partnership aimed to leverage Simon Capital’s extensive experience in the food and beverage manufacturing space to advance the operational knowledge of MicroHarvest’s team.
