Isometric, a UK-based carbon removal registry, has launched a protocol for Direct Air Capture (DAC). The DAC Protocol outlines how to monitor, report, and verify carbon capture to ensure the transparency of DAC carbon credits.
The new standard was developed by a collaboration between Isometric’s in-house scientists, an independent network of scientists, and Isometric’s cross-industry working group, which includes Deep Sky, a Canadian carbon removal project developer.
Isometric ensures DAC technologies utilize renewable energy to avoid secondary emissions through the protocol. The company requires carbon credit suppliers to have direct power purchase agreements or quantify their procurement of grid energy.
The protocol would go through a full public consultation before it can be used for issuing credits on the Isometric Registry. Isometric released the new protocol following the standard for bio-oil geological storage, which was published in December 2023 .
