Wing, the drone delivery division operated by Alphabet, has received authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flights without ground observers.
The company plans to commence such operations in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, with plans to scale across the US in the future.
The FAA's approval specifically allows Wing to use its detect and avoid system (DAA), based on Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast technology, replacing the need for ground observers during BVLOS drone flights.
Analyst QuickTake: Wing first received the FAA permit to start commercial operations in the US on a trial basis in April 2019 —the first to obtain the approval. With today’s permit, we believe the company would be able to scale operations further, extending the service in major US cities.
