At CES 2024, Sony previewed its spatial content creation VR headset and controllers aimed at professionals working with 3D. The system, set to launch later this year, enables the manipulation of 3D models and virtual objects. The company also partnered with Siemens to create a new immersive design and collaborative product using software from Siemens Xcelerator's open digital business platform.
The VR headset is powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform, features 4K OLED microdisplays, and spatial recognition capabilities with six cameras and sensors. The company claims that its "proprietary rendering technology" allows highly realistic representation of textures on objects and facial expressions of human characters in real time.
Further, its ring and pointer controllers offer streamlined interaction of objects in virtual space, while integration with third-party 3D creation applications supports remote real-time review between locations. The company also plans to collaborate with additional developers in the 3D production software space, which includes industrial and entertainment applications.
Analyst QuickTake: The launch represents the company’s formal entrance into the enterprise-focused VR headset market, diversifying from its gaming-focused PlayStation VR headset series. Sony is likely to price its new headset higher than its PSVR 2 (priced at USD 549), in a similar vein of thinking to other manufacturers (Meta’s enterprise-focused Quest Pro headset is priced at USD 990, with its consumer-oriented Quest 3 headset priced at 499).
