OpenAI in negotiations with CNN, Fox, and Time to license content for AI development

Regulation/policy
Partnerships

  • OpenAI is reportedly in talks with media organizations such as CNN, Fox Corp, and Time for licensing deals.

  • These licensing agreements could provide OpenAI with access to a wide range of news and digital and video content, which could improve the accuracy and relevance of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Recently, OpenAI has been contending with legal challenges over copyright infringement. In December 2023, The New York Times filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft , alleging copyright infringement. These negotiations indicate OpenAI's efforts to navigate issues of copyright and data source transparency while enhancing AI models with current, valuable data. However, the company has already forged partnerships with the likes of Axel Springer and Associated Press to obtain news stories to train its models.
