Carbon America, a carbon capture and sequestration startup, has submitted an application to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for permission to build and operate an underground CO2 injection well on State Lands in northeast Colorado. The project is named “Denova.”
The company is undergoing the technical review phase of its Class VI Underground Injection Control program, the regulation for underground injection of CO2. If approved, the well is expected to sequester ~350,000 tons of CO2 emissions under 5,000 ft below the surface from two ethanol plants in northeastern Colorado.
The project assists Colorado's emission reduction target of 50% by 2030 and 90% by 2050.
