SciFi Foods, a cultivated meat producer, has completed its first large-scale production of its hybrid beef product. The company aims to commercialize this product next year after regulatory approval.
The commercial-scale production was in a 500 l bioreactor in SciFi Foods' new 16,000 sq ft California-based facility. Key features of the product include a 90/10 blend of plant-based and cell-cultured ingredients, a 100% serum-free production process, and a scalable production model that utilizes single-cell suspension lines, which are adaptable to any standard stirred tank bioreactor.
Analyst QuickTake: SciFi Foods is on track to become the first US company to commercialize cell-cultured beef, pending regulatory approval. Recently, Aleph Farms , an Israeli-cultivated meat company, became the first to receive regulatory approval for a cultivated beef product. SciFi Foods claims its current production model can produce about 50,000 hybrid beef burgers annually and expects to double this number soon after launch.
