The UK and Canada have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to partner on fusion energy. As such, the two countries will seek to improve collaboration on research and development, coordinate the approach to regulation, and develop their workforce and skills base.
This partnership will strengthen the cooperation between the two countries and the global advancement of fusion technology. This announcement follows the recent announcement by the UK to invest GBP 300 million (~USD 378.5 million) to launch a high-tech HALEU nuclear fuel program. It will also support the UK's GBP 650 million (~USD 820.1 million) fusion program.
Analyst QuickTake: This is the UK’s second international fusion collaboration following the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) forming a strategic partnership to accelerate the demonstration and commercialization of fusion energy in November 2023 . Here, the two countries aimed to focus on the joint development of resources and facilities in academia, industry, and government to commercialize fusion.
