Cultivated Biosciences raises USD 5 million in seed funding to develop and commercialize yeast-based creamer

Funding

  • Swiss biotech food startup Cultivated Biosciences has raised USD 5 million in seed funding led by Navus Ventures, a Dutch venture capital firm.

  • The funds raised will primarily accelerate the startup's development of yeast cream. Additionally, the company plans to use a portion of the funds in preparation for its US market launch, slated for 2025.

  • The dairy-free cream is derived from yeast biomass fermentation and has been validated for food and beverage applications. The company plans to supply it to gastronomy and foodservice companies for use in final products.

  • Analyst QuickTake: This funding follows the firm's USD 1.5 million pre-seed round and the unveiling of its dairy-free creamer prototype. The company uses yeast biomass fermentation, which harnesses the high-protein content and rapid growth of microorganisms to develop protein-rich foods. This method differs from the commonly used precision fermentation that tries to replicate proteins on a molecular level.
