Coop partners with Kern Tec and Emmi Group to develop dairy-free milk from apricot kernels

Partnerships
Product updates

  • Swiss supermarket Coop has partnered with Dutch alternative dairy startup Kern Tec and Swiss dairy manufacturer Emmi Group to develop a dairy-free milk alternative made from apricot kernels.

  • The partnership aims to reduce food waste and carbon emissions in the region by utilizing apricot kernels produced as a byproduct of fruit processing. The alternative milk, named the Kernel Apricot Drink, is sold under Coop’s Karma brand and claims to be free from gluten, lactose, and added sugars.

  • Analyst QuickTake: In September 2023 , Kern Tec raised EUR 12 million (~USD 12.7 million) in Series A funding for scaling up production and commercializing Kern Tec’s alternative dairy products. Following this, in November 2023 , it partnered with German dairy company Bauer to create the ZUM GLÜCK!, an alternative dairy range that includes milk, yogurt, and pudding products.
