Swiss supermarket Coop has partnered with Dutch alternative dairy startup Kern Tec and Swiss dairy manufacturer Emmi Group to develop a dairy-free milk alternative made from apricot kernels.
The partnership aims to reduce food waste and carbon emissions in the region by utilizing apricot kernels produced as a byproduct of fruit processing. The alternative milk, named the Kernel Apricot Drink, is sold under Coop’s Karma brand and claims to be free from gluten, lactose, and added sugars.
Analyst QuickTake: In September 2023 , Kern Tec raised EUR 12 million (~USD 12.7 million) in Series A funding for scaling up production and commercializing Kern Tec’s alternative dairy products. Following this, in November 2023 , it partnered with German dairy company Bauer to create the ZUM GLÜCK!, an alternative dairy range that includes milk, yogurt, and pudding products.
