VR headset manufacturer Pimax announced two new headsets at the Frontier 2024 event: The Pimax Crystal Super and Crystal Light, priced at USD 1,799 and USD 699 respectively. The company also announced an Airlink module, priced at USD 299. The headsets are also currently available for pre-orders.
Key features of the Crystal Super PC VR headset include an interchangeable optical system allowing changes in displays and lenses with switches between QLED and micro OLED panels, a screen resolution of 3840x3840 per eye, dynamic foveated rendering, and inside-out tracking. The Crystal Light PC VR headset includes a 2880 x 2880 per eye resolution utilizing aspherical glass lenses. While utilizing fixed-foveated rendering, Pimax had to remove eye tracking and interchangeable lenses to cater to a lower price point.
The company also announced specifications for its 60G Airlink module, which enables wireless PC VR with the Pimax Crystal. The device utilizes a combined transmitter and receiver and a dongle that connects to the headset via micro-HDMI. Pimax claims that the Airlink module offers significantly higher bandwidth than traditional Wi-Fi solutions, including Wi-Fi 6E.
Analyst QuickTake: Pimax announced its standard Crystal VR headset in June 2023 , priced at USD 1,599. The headset offered a 4K resolution per eye with support for local dimming, eye tracking, and foveated rendering—although it lacked the interchangeable optical system the Crystal Super offers.
