Natron Energy, a company developing sodium-ion batteries using Prussian Blue chemistry, has begun operations at its manufacturing facility in Holland, Michigan, making it the first-ever commercial-scale production of sodium-ion batteries in the US.
The company invested over USD 40 million to upgrade the USD 300 million facility by converting lithium-ion battery manufacturing lines to sodium-ion battery production. Furthermore, the ARPA-E also provided USD 19.8 million in funding through the Seeding Critical Advances for Leading Energy Technologies with Untapped Potential (SCALEUP) program to support this initiative.
The facility is expected to produce 600 MW of sodium-ion batteries annually at full capacity with plans to begin battery shipments in June 2024. The company will initially focus on the energy storage needs of data center customers.
