  • Natron Energy, a company developing sodium-ion batteries using Prussian Blue chemistry, has begun operations at its manufacturing facility in Holland, Michigan, making it the first-ever commercial-scale production of sodium-ion batteries in the US.

  • The company invested over USD 40 million to upgrade the USD 300 million facility by converting lithium-ion battery manufacturing lines to sodium-ion battery production. Furthermore, the ARPA-E also provided USD 19.8 million in funding through the Seeding Critical Advances for Leading Energy Technologies with Untapped Potential (SCALEUP) program to support this initiative.

  • The facility is expected to produce 600 MW of sodium-ion batteries annually at full capacity with plans to begin battery shipments in June 2024. The company will initially focus on the energy storage needs of data center customers.
