Google, in association with HP, is planning to launch Project Starline, a corporate teleconference platform. According to the announcement made ahead of the Google I/O 2024 conference, Project Starline is expected to be commercially available in 2025. It aims to mimic in-person interactions virtually, making remote conversations more realistic.
Project Starline recreates a lifelike virtual meeting experience by merging 3D imaging, cameras, and specially designed screens. Key features include integration with video conferencing platforms like Google Meet and Zoom and the capability to create an illusion of an in-person conversation despite geographical separation.
Analyst QuickTake: This announcement comes after years of testing and private technical previews, during which the project faced numerous setbacks in its early days (which began in 2021), including technical challenges and a reorganization of its in-house R&D division in 2022.
