Automaker Volvo has unveiled its "production-ready" self-driving Class 8 semi-truck developed in partnership with Aurora Innovation, a company specializing in autonomous driving technology.
The truck, built on Volvo's VNL model, is equipped with advanced sensors and cameras to support Aurora's Level 4 autonomous driving system, allowing it to operate without a driver. The technology will also serve as a blueprint for future autonomous vehicles across Volvo's product line.
Aurora and Volvo have already made significant strides in testing their technology on public roads, and they plan to expand the deployment of these autonomous vehicles intensively within the next decade.
Analyst QuickTake: Volvo first partnered with Aurora in March 2021 to jointly develop autonomous trucking solutions at scale for applications in North America. It unveiled a prototype version of the truck in September 2021.
