Microsoft and Meta partner for volumetric apps on Quest headsets at Build 2024 conference

Partnerships

  • Microsoft announced a partnership with Meta at its Build 2024 conference to develop "Windows Volumetric Apps" for Meta Quest headsets. The collaboration aims to bring Windows 365 and local PC connectivity to Quest headsets, enabling developers to extend their software into the 3D space.

  • Developers can sign up for a “volumetric API” to provide spatial understanding within the app. Microsoft stated that it was looking for entities that create plugins for 3D Windows desktop applications or those interested in extending the applications into mixed reality.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The announced partnership deepens the company’s ties with Meta. In April 2024 , they collaborated to create a limited edition VR headset inspired by its Xbox game console. The move also expands the company’s activity in the XR software space, following the addition of AR work instructions on its Teams smartphone app and a VR version of Microsoft Mesh.
