Microsoft, in collaboration with Providence Health System and the University of Washington, has introduced Prov-GigaPath, an AI-powered digital pathology tool for cancer diagnostics, to overcome the drawbacks of existing computational pathology models.
The tool consists of an ML model claimed to be the result of one of the largest AI training efforts in real-world, whole-slide tissue analysis. It includes 1.3 billion pathology images derived from ~171,000 slides spanning 31 major tissue types, as well as radiology scans, genomics results, and patient health records provided by the healthcare system.
This initiative results from focused efforts to overcome the shortage of real-world data, the inability to incorporate whole-slide modeling, and the lack of accessibility.
