Mastercard launches facial-recognition based biometric checkout solution in Poland

Partnerships

  • Mastercard has partnered with Empik, a Polish retail chain, PayEye , a provider of biometric payment solutions, and Planet Pay, a payment service provider, to launch "Pay by Your Glance," a biometric checkout technology enabling users to authenticate payments using facial recognition in Poland.

  • Users can register their face, payment credentials, and other necessary information in-store, allowing them to complete transactions by looking at a camera at the payment terminal.

  • T he solution will be available from June 10 in five Empik stores across Poland as a pilot.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Last November, Mastercard partnered with NEC to implement facial recognition-based payment authentication by leveraging NEC's face recognition tech and Mastercard's payment systems. This partnership followed Mastercard launching a pilot program in May 2022 for retailers to offer facial recognition and fingerprint scanning-based payments. Moreover, Mastercard has also been launching solutions for the broader biometric payment authentication market. For instance, it partnered with Ingenico, Fujitsu Frontech, Fulcrum Biometrics, and Scanntech earlier this month to launch a palm-recognition-based payment authentication solution in Latin America .
