Apple announces visionOS 2 for Vision Pro headset at WWDC 2024

Product updates

  • Apple announced the latest generation of its operating system for the Vision Pro headset, visionOS 2, at WWDC 2024. The update will be freely accessible to headset users in Fall 2024.

  • Key features of visionOS 2 include the ability to spatialize photos into interactive experiences using AI, an ultra-wide virtual display feature allowing the headset to generate a dual 4K-equivalent curved ultrawide display, added train support in travel mode, mouse support for the headset, and a new navigation option facilitating access to the control center and home screen.

  • Other updates include new volumetric APIs for running dual apps and a new TableTopKit for game development. Additionally, Apple's Immersive Video—its 180-degree 8K video format—is expanding its partnerships to enable more hardware and workflow integrations.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The announcement complements improvements made to its Persona avatars in its visionOS 1.1 update , improving the fidelity of its spatial avatars and allowing it to be utilized in user applications apart from FaceTime calls. Other notable improvements made as part of the update include a "Hands-free Capture" mode, and a mobile device management system for businesses to more effectively govern their devices.
