Microsoft discontinues GPT Builder in Copilot

Product updates

  • Microsoft has announced that it will discontinue the GPT Builder feature in its Copilot Pro AI assistant. The ability to create custom GPTs in Copilot Pro will be phased out from July 10, 2024, and all user-generated and Microsoft-generated GPTs, along with related data, will be deleted between July 10 and July 14, 2024.

  • The company has advised users to save any custom GPT instructions they want to retain before the data deletion process begins.

  • Microsoft stated that it is shifting its focus on GPTs to commercial and enterprise scenarios while prioritizing core product experiences for Copilot Pro.

  • Analyst QuickTake: In January 2024, Microsoft introduced Copilot Pro, a paid subscription model priced at USD 20 per month, offering preferential access to the AI model and integration with Microsoft Office applications, along with an option to develop Copilot GPTs. The decision to stop GPT efforts in the consumer version of Copilot Pro is reportedly a part of the company's ongoing evaluation of its strategy for consumer Copilot extensibility.
