Carbios, L’Occitane, and Pinard partner to launch enzymatically rPET bottle for shower oil

Partnerships

  • Carbios, a biotech firm that recycles PET plastics and polyester fibers using an enzymatic process, has partnered with beauty products retailer L’Occitane en Provence and French packaging company Pinard Beauty Pack. They are collaborating to create a shower oil bottle entirely from enzymatically recycled PET (rPET) for the L’Occitane Amande range.

  • The bottles are produced by processing difficult-to-recycle wastes like colored bottles and multilayer trays, which are then depolymerized using Carbios’ bio-recycling technology. The resulting monomers, PTA and MEG, are re-polymerized to create new, fully recycled PET resins. This partnership aligns with L’Occitane's objective to manufacture all its store bottles from 100% recycled PET by 2027.

  • Analyst QuickTake: In January 2023 , the company partnered with Novozymes for industrial-scale biorecycling of PET products, and in April 2024, Carbios broke ground on an enzymatic biorecycling plant in France. This latest partnership underlines growing market acceptance for the company’s technology, as companies are actively looking to minimize the use of virgin plastics.
