Protein Industries Canada initiates CAD 24.5 million plant-based food expansion project

Industry news

  • Protein Industries Canada, an industry-led, non-profit organization, announced a partnership agreement with Roquette, Prairie Fava, BioNeutra, and Plant Up to advance plant-based food innovation and market diversification. The project intends to create new ingredients and food products, refine process efficiencies, and explore new market growth for co-products.

  • The collaboration will focus on creating new fava-based ingredients, finding uses for pea starch and fiber, and expanding through new products and new markets for protein, starch, and fiber. The project leader, Roquette, will be tasked with developing new ingredients and improving processing productivity, while Prairie Fava will expand fava bean grounds and improve dehulling technology.

  • The CAD 24.5 million (~USD 17.9 million) funding comprises a ~CAD 10.7 million (~USD 7.8 million) contribution from Protein Industries Canada and ~CAD 13.7 million (~USD 10 million) from the four partners. The project also expects to receive support from the Canadian Departments of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development and Agriculture and Agri-Food.
