The Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS), a provider of sustainable food solutions, has secured an investment from Canada's leading agriculture lender, Farm Credit Canada (FCC), to accelerate breeding and innovation in Canadian agriculture. The exact funding amount is undisclosed.
The funding will be used to accelerate a breeding scheme that uses technology, genomic selection, bioinformatics, and computer simulation to fast-track genetic advancements in crops and livestock. This is expected to bring new products to market 2–3 years earlier and offer improved agronomics and disease resistance.
The GIFS aims to enhance global food security and expects this approach to rekindle Canada’s agricultural productivity growth, stimulate rural economic growth, and increase revenue and market share for the Canadian agricultural sector.
