Sony is reportedly cutting back on its VR game development efforts, with a source claiming that there would be "very few opportunities for VR game development at Sony going forward."
Another source claimed that only two PS VR2 games were currently developing at Sony. Last year, it launched only three games for the PSVR 2 and has not yet revealed any first-party games scheduled for release in 2024 or 2025.
Among these three games, the developer of Firewall Ultra, First Contact Entertainment, has been shut down. Additionally, Sony closed London Studio in February, where it developed Blood & Truth, one of the top-rated PSVR games, and the PlayStation VR Worlds demo disc.
Analyst QuickTake: This news aligns with Sony launching a PC adapter for the PSVR 2, offering consumers access to a broader range of third-party VR games. While VR game development costs can be substantial, the return on investment is highly likely to be lackluster—a factor likely to have heavily influenced Sony’s reported decision. This is due to numerous titles being available in the market while having a smaller consumer base compared to non-VR games.
