Bolder Industries and Patagonia partner to recycle wetsuits into new ones

Partnerships

  • Bolder Industries, a Colorado-based manufacturer of sustainable chemicals, has partnered with outdoor apparel manufacturer Patagonia to develop a solution for recycling end-of-life wetsuits made using Yulex rubber, converting them into materials for creating new wetsuits. Patagonia plans to accept unwanted wetsuits from any brand using Yulex.

  • The partnership utilizes a proprietary process to break down natural rubber at a molecular level, transforming it into carbon black, used for dyeing wetsuits. The recycling program is claimed to allow Patagonia and other companies using Yulex in their wetsuits to have a more eco-friendly approach to production, utilizing less water and releasing fewer greenhouse gases than traditional methods.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Patagonia partnered with Eastman in February 2024 to recycle textile waste into Naia Renew Fiber. The latest partnership aligns with the company’s sustainability focus, which also saw a partnership with Natural Fiber Welding in September 2021 to develop circular solutions for textiles.
