Waymo opens up driverless robotaxis service to public in San Francisco

Product updates

  • Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving tech development unit, has launched its commercial driverless robotaxi service for the general public in San Francisco. This move reverses the previous process, which required interested customers to join a waitlist to access the service.

  • The robotaxi service allows users to request a ride through a mobile app in one of Waymo's driverless vehicles.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Waymo has been operating in San Francisco since late 2021 and started charging for driver-ed robotaxi services in March 2022 and driverless robotaxi services in August 2023. The company also recently obtained the approval of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to extend services from San Francisco to the San Francisco Peninsula and Los Angeles areas.
