MycoWorks, a biomaterials company developing mycelium-derived alternatives to plastic foams, textiles, and leathers, has partnered with luxury automaker Cadillac to design and create a sustainable, leather-like product derived from mushrooms for use in Cadillac's vehicles, called "Fine Mycelium."
Cadillac plans to use the mycelium-based material developed with MycoWorks for the upholstery in its luxury vehicles. This innovative material is claimed to match the strength and luxury quality of traditional leather while offering weight reduction and improved efficiency. Cadillac has also created a card holder from Fine Mycelium to demonstrate the material’s capabilities.
Analyst QuickTake : The partnership was preceded by MycoWorks securing strategic investment from GM Ventures, the venture arm of Cadillac’s parent GM in October 2022 . The tie-up brings the company’s product closer to finding commercial applications in the automotive industry.
