Honda has outlined its intentions to introduce an enhanced recycling plan for vehicle parts in its 2024 ESG Data Book. The plan includes recycling car batteries, bumpers, and floor carpet mats when a vehicle's life reaches its end, focusing on new recycling initiatives for batteries in light electric vehicles launching this year.
The company expects to initiate improvements to battery monitoring functions, which help to determine component deterioration, promote resource efficiency, and reduce costs for car owners and lifetime management through conversion from onboard to stationary use.
The company has also launched the "Imakore+(Plus)" program in Japan and a software upgrade service for the Accord model in the US, with a focus on enhancing used cars with new accessories, supporting longer product lifespan and efficient resource use.
Analyst QuickTake : In April 2023 , Honda also partnered with POSCO Holdings, a South Korean steelmaker, to explore the supply of materials for cathodes and anodes (the core components of batteries) and battery recycling technology. The company claims its recycling-oriented approach will ensure efficient use of resources and reduce the economic burden on car owners.
