Andritz, a leading technology group that supplies industrial plants, has partnered with the forestry economic association, Södra, to launch a solution to recover kraft lignin, a byproduct of pulp production. The system is set to be installed at Södra's pulp mill, claimed to be the first and largest of its kind in Sweden. Andritz claims that the recovered lignin can be sold to create additional revenue streams while minimizing waste.
The system includes Andritz’s LignaRec lignin recovery process, supplemented by an Andritz SulfoLoop sulphuric acid plant. The LignaRec system recovers lignin from the black liquor produced during the pulping process and will be subject to further refinement onsite. The SulfoLoop plant serves as a circular solution to recover the sulfuric acid used during the lignin recovery process.
Analyst QuickTake: The partnership showcases the capabilities of Andritz’s CircleToZero initiative, to which the LignaRec and SulfoLoop technologies belong. CircleToZero aims to maximize the use of industrial side streams and byproducts, paving the way to zero-emissions and zero-waste production.
