Meta introduced new features for its Quest headsets aimed at pre-teens aged 10 to 12 years. The update allows parents to individually approve each user their child can interact with on Quest, including in calls and chats. They can also approve users who join them in VR experiences.
Parents must first approve their child's Meta account and have control over it. Meta also ensures that these accounts do not show ads by default and only recommend age-appropriate games and apps.
Analyst QuickTake: The news follows Meta lowering the minimum age for Quest users to 10 years in 2023 , as it aimed to attract a larger customer base while addressing the popularity of VR among children. Additionally, the feature expansion seeks to navigate growing scrutiny Meta has faced with regard to protecting minors on its platforms following a Senate Hearing in January 2024 .
