Carbios partners with Sasa for potential licensing of PET bio-recycling technology

Partnerships

  • CARBIOS, a biotech firm that recycles PET plastics and polyester fibers using an enzymatic process, has partnered with Turkey-based polyester manufacturer SASA to potentially license its PET bio-recycling technology.

  • Carbios’ technology could allow SASA to construct a new plant in Turkey that can process up to 100,000 tons of PET waste annually. This waste can be turned into polyester pellets, fibers, and textiles, primarily for the European market. The technology is part of SASA's strategic plan to embrace circularity and increase its competitiveness in the polyester industry.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The partnership between the companies reflects the anticipation that demand for recycled polyester in Europe will increase due to regulatory changes. In June 2024 , Carbios partnered with Zhink Group to build a PET bio-recycling plant in China with a minimum annual processing capacity of 50,000 tons of PET waste.
