Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving tech development unit, is expanding its robotaxi service area by 10 sq mi in San Francisco, covering Daly City, Broadmoor, and Colma. This brings the total service area to about 55 sq mi. In Los Angeles, Waymo is expanding by 16 sq mi, including areas like Marina del Rey, Mar Vista, Playa Vista, Hollywood, Chinatown, and Westwood.
The company also mentioned that the demand has increased in Los Angeles—with over 150,000 people on the waitlist—while the waitlist for San Francisco was removed in June.
The expansion follows March 2024 approval from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to operate in new areas, including the San Francisco Peninsula and Los Angeles.
Analyst QuickTake: Waymo has achieved milestones such as providing over 2 million paid trips across its markets, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix, with over 50,000 paid trips each week. In July 2024, Alphabet also announced plans to invest USD 5 billion further in Waymo in a multi-year financing deal to further develop its self-driving technology and enhance operations.
