Alphabet's Waymo to test fully autonomous robotaxis on San Francisco freeways

Geographic expansion

  • Waymo, the self-driving tech development unit of Alphabet, will begin testing fully autonomous vehicles without human safety drivers on freeways in the San Francisco Bay Area this week, starting with a limited number of vehicles outside of rush hour.

  • Initial testing will involve Waymo employees, following the company's approval from California regulators to charge for autonomous freeway rides, granted in March 2024.

  • Analyst QuickTake: This testing marks a step in Waymo's broader expansion efforts in San Francisco, also supported by the recent announcement of a USD 5 billion multi-year financing from Alphabet. Earlier this month, Waymo also expanded its robotaxi service area by 10 sq mi in San Francisco, which now includes Daly City, Broadmoor, and Colma.
