Storegga Geotechnologies, a UK-based provider of carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions, PETRONAS, a Malaysian state-owned oil and gas company, and ADNOC, an Abu Dhabi energy and petrochemicals group, have signed a joint study and development agreement to assess carbon storage capabilities in Malaysia.
Under this collaboration, the three companies will evaluate the CO2 storage capabilities of saline aquifers and the construction of CCS facilities in the Penyu basin, offshore Peninsular Malaysia.
The partnership aims to develop CO2 capture and storage capacity of at least 5 million tons annually by 2030. The scope includes CO2 transportation and logistics studies, geophysical and geomechanical modeling, and research into advanced technologies such as AI to enhance storage capacity. Activities under the agreement are expected to begin later this year.
