Lignin Industries, a Swedish greentech company, has commercialized a bio-based material named Renol that is developed from lignin, often found in trees. Renol is presented as a sustainable alternative to fossil-based materials in the plastic industry.
Lignin Industries reports Renol can be used in various applications, including domestic goods, automotive parts, consumer electronics, and PE films. It can replace between 15% and 40% of fossil oil as a raw material in plastic production and can be mixed with virgin, recycled, or other bio-based materials.
The company claims Renol has a carbon footprint that is significantly lower than that of conventional plastics and remains stable during recycling, retaining its properties over multiple cycles. Lignin Industries operates a factory near Stockholm and plans to scale up production through collaborations with external partners.
