Nike has entered into a partnership with Ananas Anam, a producer of the patented pineapple-based leather “Piñatex,” to launch a sneaker collection made from vegan leather material.
The footwear line, named “Happy Pineapple,” includes five sneaker models available for purchase globally from mid-June 2021.
The partnership is in line with Nike’s “Move to Zero” initiative, which aims to reduce carbon emissions in its global supply chain by 30% by 2030. Nike has also launched sustainable product lines with recycled content such as polyester yarn, foam, plastic bottles, t-shirts, footwear, and wine corks.
Based in the UK, Ananas Anam produces Piñatex from pineapple leaves generally discarded as waste. The material consists of 80% pineapple leaf fiber mixed with polylactic acid (PLA), a bioplastic derived from corn, which makes up the remaining 20% of the material. The company’s pineapple leather can be used in footwear, clothing, handbags, accessories, automotive upholstery, and hotel interior installations. By May 2021, Ananas Anam had collaborated with around 3,000 brands, including H&M, Skoda, Hugo Boss, Adidas, and Hilton Bankside Hotel.
