Northvolt cuts 1,600 jobs amid EV industry challenges

Management news

  • Northvolt, a Swedish EV battery and energy storage manufacturer, announced 1,600 job cuts across three sites due to headwinds in the EV industry. The company is suspending the expansion of its Northvolt Ett gigafactory in Skellefteå, northern Sweden.

  • The layoffs include 1,000 jobs in Skellefteå, 400 in Västerås, and 200 in Stockholm. The layoffs are subject to ongoing union negotiations. The announcement follows weeks of uncertainty and financial difficulties for the company.

  • The company will focus on expanding operations in Skellefteå to produce battery cells with a 16GWh production capacity, down from the initially planned 30GWh annual capacity for the Ett project.
