Microsoft partners with UNDO for enhanced rock weathering carbon removal project

Partnerships

  • UNDO, a UK-based carbon removal startup using enhanced rock weathering technology, has partnered with Microsoft to permanently remove 15,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere using rocks and soil.

  • Under the agreement, UNDO will spread 65,000 tons of crushed basalt and wollastonite across the UK and Canada. The partnership will also fund research on ERW, enabling UNDO to establish field trials and monitoring sites for research into the measurement, reporting, and verification of ERW-based CO2 removal.

  • Analyst QuickTake: This collaboration follows an initial agreement in April 2023 to remove 5,000 tons of CO2 by spreading 25,000 tons of crushed basalt on agricultural soils in the UK. This was Microsoft's first ERW purchase.
