Climeworks, a Swiss carbon capture startup, has partnered with 44.01, an Omani carbon mineralization startup, to explore the potential to store carbon emissions captured from Climeworks’ Direct Air Capture projects in Oman.
The two companies claim that Oman has ideal geological conditions to store carbon dioxide through the natural process of mineralization in peridotite. Carbon dioxide reacts with peridotite rocks and precipitates carbonates, thereby permanently removing emissions in geological carbon sinks.
Founded in 2009, Climeworks specializes in Direct Air Capture (DAC) operations. Unlike traditional carbon capture technologies, which capture carbon dioxide from the flue stacks of industrial operations, DAC involves directly capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. As of January 2021, Climeworks operated 14 DAC facilities across Switzerland, Iceland, and Italy, and was in the process of constructing its first large-scale facility in Iceland.
Founded in 2020, 44.01 attempts to leverage the geological conditions in Oman to provide carbon removal as a service. The company aims to mineralize one gigaton of carbon dioxide per year by 2030.
