LanzaTech, a carbon recycling company, has expanded its biorefining platform to produce LanzaTech Nutritional Protein (LNP) from gas fermentation. LNP is a microbial protein that can be used in various food applications, including human consumption, pet food, and animal feed. The company has not disclosed pricing for the new product.
LNP is produced using Cupriavidus necator, a soil bacterium, in a continuous fermentation process. The protein is claimed to be 80% protein by dry weight, contains all amino acids, and has functional properties similar to whey and pea protein. It is odorless and neutral in color and can be used in foods such as non-dairy cheese, meat analogs, bread, and smoothies.
LanzaTech claims that LNP production uses a fraction of the land and water resources required by traditional protein sources, has no negative impact on biodiversity, and helps address food security issues. The company also claims that LNP can be produced anywhere in the world, independent of weather extremes, making it a resilient food supply solution.
