D-Orbit, an Italian space logistics and satellite deployment company, has partnered with the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop a spacecraft-servicing vehicle for geostationary orbit satellites.
The partnership involves a EUR 119.6 million (USD 131 million) contract for D-Orbit to develop, launch, and demonstrate a vehicle capable of rendezvous, docking, and controlling satellites in geostationary orbit. The project, known as RISE, is part of ESA's Active Debris Removal/In-Orbit Servicing (ADRIOS) project, which aims to extend satellite lifespans, relocate and repair satellites, and eventually recycle valuable spacecraft components in orbit.
D-Orbit will contribute 20% of the project cost, with additional funding from various European space agencies. The first mission is expected to occur in 2027 or 2028, marking D-Orbit's expansion from low-Earth orbit operations to geostationary orbit services.
