Flashfood, a Canadian startup offering an app to help customers find groceries close to the expiration date and purchase them at a discount, is expanding its services to all stores owned by The Giant Company, a regional supermarket chain in the US, after a successful pilot program.
In May 2020, the two companies partnered for a pilot program to offer Flashfood’s app and services to four supermarkets. Since then, The Giant Company has continued to add the app to more of its supermarkets, totaling 30 stores at present.
Through the pilot program, The Giant Company reported that it was able to save around 250,000 lbs. of food from going to waste while also providing consumers with fresh produce at a lower price.
The rollout is planned to start with Giant stores in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia and is expected to be available at 170 stores by Q4 2021.
Flashfood currently operates in Canada and 10 US states, including New York and Michigan. The app claims to be responsible for selling more than 19.6 million lbs. of food across more than 1,000 locations throughout the US and Canada. The app was also piloted by another regional US retailer, Meijer, in 2019 and is reported to be used in 240 Meijer supercenters as of February 2021.
