Zoom announced signing a definitive agreement to acquire AI-powered language translation solutions provider Karlsruhe Information Technology Solutions (Kites) GmbH. The details of the transaction were not disclosed. As a result of the deal, the co-founder of Kites, Alex Waibel, is expected to advise on Zoom’s machine translation R&D.
Founded in 2015, Kites was initially developed to facilitate communication between international academic teams, and since then, it has expanded to broader AI-based translation. The team of 12 research scientists at Kites will remain in Germany and assist Zoom’s engineering team in developing translation solutions for its users. Furthermore, Zoom revealed that it is considering the opening of an R&D facility in Germany.
The acquisition follows Zoom’s USD 1.75 billion share offering in January 2021, which was allocated to be used for potential M&A opportunities, through which the company could develop its technology. This acquisition will enable Zoom to incorporate real-time translation capabilities into its meetings.
