Malta, a long-duration energy storage startup, has partnered with Siemens Energy, a German energy company, to co-develop the commercial design of turbomachinery components required for Malta’s long-duration energy storage system.
The partnership will focus on the development of innovative heat pumps and heat engine components to support a utility-scale 100-megawatt system for 10-200 hours of storage.
Malta develops utility-scale electro-thermal energy storage systems for long-duration energy storage. Malta has yet to commercialize its technology, which takes electricity, converts it, and stores that electricity as heat, later converting it back to electricity to be redistributed on the electric grid on demand. Malta was incubated at Google X from 2016-2018, before being spun out as an independent company.
