Aurora Innovation, an autonomous vehicle technology startup, has announced plans to go public via a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), Reinvent Technology Partners Y.
The deal’s financial terms have not been officially disclosed yet; however, as per TechCrunch in early June, Aurora could be valued at close to USD 12 billion.
Reinvent Technology Partners Y is a blank check company led by executives, including LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Zynga Inc. founder Mark Pincus, that raised USD 978 million in a March IPO. Other Reinvent SPAC deals include mergers with flying taxi startup Joby Aviation (February 2021) and insurance technology platform Hippo (March 2021).
Aurora develops self-driving technology, dubbed “Aurora Driver,” using Peterbilt class-8 trucks and Chrysler Pacifica minivans. The vehicles were tested on commercial routes for package delivery in Texas. The company also has partnerships with Paccar and Volvo to develop and deploy autonomous trucks. In addition, Aurora develops its own LiDAR sensor system unveiled in mid-2020, “FirstLight Lidar,” to be integrated into its Aurora Driver technology.
