Element, a decentralized communication platform, has raised USD 30 million in a Series B funding round led by Protocol Labs. The round included the participation of Metaplanet, Automattic (WordPress parent), and Notion (the virtual workspace software provider).
The round brings the total funding to USD 48 million with the fresh funds allocated to develop its technology, including investments in its P2P architecture to bypass server requirements and introduce a decentralized voice and video conferencing service.
Founded in 2017, Element is the flagship collaboration platform for the decentralized Matrix communication network. The platform offers governments, businesses, and individuals a secure communication platform for using the global Matrix network. The company’s products include Riot, a Matrix-based messaging app (now called Element), and Modular, a Matrix hosting service known as Element Matrix Services.
