Shiok Meat expands into cultured red meat with acquisition of Gaia Foods

M&A

  • Shiok Meat, a Singapore based cell cultured seafood startup, has acquired Gaia, a Southeast Asian cell cultured red meat startup, for an undisclosed sum.

  • Founded in 2019, Gaia Foods specializes in cell-cultured pork, beef, and mutton. The startup developed Southeast Asia’s first cell cultured beef portions in October 2020.

  • Shiok Meat, founded in 2018, specializes in the development of cell cultured crustaceans such as shrimps, crabs, lobsters. The startup expects to commercialize their first product by 2023 in Singapore, followed by Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia. The acquisition follows Shiok Meat’s bridge funding round in late-July that raised an undisclosed amount for ongoing R&D and the construction of its new production facility.
