Amazon’s Prime Air delivery drones receive FAA approval for commercial use

Product updates

  • On Monday, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a Part 135 air carrier certificate to Amazon’s Prime Air drones, which allows the company to launch commercial drone deliveries in the US on a trial basis.

  • Amazon is the third drone delivery company to receive the certification after Google Wing (April 2019) and UPS Flight Forward (October 2019). Similar applications from at least five other players have been submitted to the FAA for certification as of May 2020.

  • Previously, Amazon received FAA approval to test Prime Air deliveries in the US in June 2019, and the company has been trialing commercial drone deliveries in the UK since 2016.
