Aurora Innovation, an autonomous vehicle technology startup, launched its next-generation hardware kit dubbed “Fusion,” integrating its technology with its recently acquired Uber’s self-driving car unit – Advanced Technologies Group (ATG).
The hardware kit utilizes Aurora’s proprietary “FirstLight Lidar,” radars, cameras, and a new powerhouse computer with 5x more processing power, and offers an improved range, a 360-degree field of view. The kit will also feed data to improve the decision-making speed and accuracy of Aurora’s self-driving technology dubbed “Aurora Driver.” Fusion also enables its autonomous vehicles to operate in varying weather conditions, including rain, snow, and fog; it also tracks velocity and computes acceleration of surrounding vehicles faster.
Aurora plans to integrate Fusion into its trucks and passenger van fleets for commercial pilots by the end of the year, aiming to launch autonomous trucking and ride-hailing services by 2023 and 2024 respectively.
