Six school districts in California and Washington are including Rebellyous Foods plant-based chicken nuggets to schools' lunch menus starting this school year. The new Kickin’ Nuggets from Rebellyous Foods will be serving roughly 125,000 students collectively. The adoption came in the midst of a supply chain shortage for real chicken.
Earlier this year Impossible Foods was awarded necessary approval from the USDA, allowing the startup to serve Impossible Burger in lunch menus across K-12 school districts nationwide. New York City also adopted “Meatless Mondays” for all 1,700 public schools in the area. Furthermore, resolution 238 adopted by NYC Council in 2019 banned all processed meats from school lunch menus, including meats such as hot dogs and pepperoni.
